IMPORTANT MATERIAL
There are many versions of Little Women both in play and movie form. We will be doing the Kevin Cunningham version. I would recommend taking a look at several versions of Little Women. I particularly am a fan of the 1994 movie version. Although it will differ from your script, I love the charactor protrayals.
Cast Details:
Little Women has a cast size of 6 - 8 female roles and 5 male roles with some minor doubling. Some roles are more demanding than others for time and line memorization. I will consider having 1 - 2 swings to cover roles in rehearsal and in an emergency. These swings would be off-stage swings during performances or cover a minor line or two. Please indicate if you would be interested in a swing on your audition form. This does not mean that you would not be considered for another role.
We encourage all those who are interested to audition.
**Auditions are for BCHS students only grades 9 - 12.
A Note About Casting:
Please understand that the casting process is complicated and takes into account many factors, first and foremost being your audition. It is a giant puzzle with many moving pieces. Every role should be respected as we are all one company and it takes everyone to put on quality productions.
CHARACTERS:
LOUISA MAY ALCOTT - the author in her thirties
THOMAS NILES - Louisa's editor
MEG MARCH - the responsible no-nonsense oldest daughter, whose thoughts are turning to love
JO MARCH - the feisty tomboy and alter-ego of the author
BETH MARCH - the sickly but angelic helper
AMY MARCH - the tempestuous self-important youngest child
MARMIE MARCH - the independent, caring, morally outspoken mother of the little women
HANNAH - long time servant of the March family, more of a friend than a servant
LAURIE - the rich but lonely young man next door
MR. LAWRENCE - Laurie's irascible grandfather
MR. DAVIS - Amy's discipline-heavy school teacher
MR. BROOKE - Laurie's tutor, later Meg's suitor
DR. BANGS - Local doctor
AUNT MARCH - Mr. March's well-to-do but busybody sister
PROF. BHAER - a German scholar Jo meets in New York
Audition Tips
To memorize or not to memorize? It is always good to be memorized as you are then better prepared to deliver the best audition possible. The more familiar you are with the material, the more effective your audition will be.
Be as familiar with the play and the characters as possible. There are many versions of the show that you can watch on Youtube. The original cast album is widely available. Be aware that there are differences between that album and the version we have licensed for performance. Read through the show synopsis and character descriptions. Think of where your skills would best fit within the world of the show and try to pick a monologue for your audition that conveys that.
Be confident – even if you have never done this before, the audition is a chance for you to show what you can do.
Be professional - stand for your audition, dress well, introduce yourself (full name, grade, and monologue you will be performing). Make sure that we can clearly hear you.
If you are nervous, channel your nerves into good positive energy. It is important to remember that the creative team wants you to be great and wants to find the right fit for you.
Ask questions - it is ok to ask questions prior to your audition - contact Mrs. Roos (Director/Advisor) at aroos@bethlehemschools.org
A Message about conflicts: We try to work around conflicts when possible but it has become increasingly harder and harder to schedule rehearsals. In preparation for this year, know that a typical rehearsal schedule begins as early as 3:40 and often as late as 6:30 on Tues, Wed, Fri and on some Saturdays we typically rehearse 10:30 - 2:00. Rehearsal schedules are posted one week in advance or more and you will likely not be called for all rehearsals. Please try to schedule your conflicts after 6:00 or 6:30 pm. Due to a flexible cast size, there will be opportunities for smaller roles if you have conflicts. Please discuss these concerns with us prior to casting.
When we are rehearsing a show, we need these rehearsals to be the priority and you will need to schedule your other rehearsals, classes, work, etc. around this schedule. We will do the best we can to work around approved conflicts at the time of your audition such as college auditions, and SAT's. No conflicts (minus approved exceptions) will be accepted in our last two weeks including tech and performances 12/2 - 12/15 ( there will be rehearsal during Thanksgiving break).
